Types of grass in your lawn

The types of grass you have in your lawn is important to the health and aesthetic value of your yard. There are four basic types of grasses that are grown for landscaping purposes, but there are some hybrid types of grass that may not necessarily be what you think they are. These four common types of grasses are: Bermuda grass, Colorado turf, St. Augustine grass and tall fescue grass and more. Although each of these types of grasses has its own characteristics and advantages, the choice usually comes down to maintenance and color.

Most homeowners choose to plant and maintain warm season grass species, especially for those areas with mild winters. Warm season grasses are most efficient for areas that are generally dry or have a mild, moderate climate. These types of grasses will require minimal mowing throughout the year and are generally tolerant of some shade. However, the cool season varieties can tolerate more sun and can provide an appealing contrast to tall fescue.

Bermuda grass is another popular choice, especially for those homeowners who wish to create a yard that combines appeal with function. This medium-sized grass is good for landscaping in lawns with higher elevations and transitional temperatures, such as those found in the southeastern United States. It has a coarse texture and a tendency to grow quickly, requiring relatively low mowing. However, Bermuda grass does require mowing often, particularly during the summer months.

If you want a lush green lawn, then there are several different grass species from which to choose. However, there are several different types of grasses that do not have the lush appeal of their more luscious relatives. These grasses are typically drought resistant but can still wither and die if the conditions become extreme or the grass is damaged from severe drought. This means that a few short weeks of extreme temperatures or extreme rain may be all it takes to kill your lawn.

Centipedes are probably one of the most common insects that attract people to yards, both for entertainment and for disease. They come in a wide array of colors, ranging from bright green blades to bright yellow and black. There are even species of centipede grass that grow with flowers, producing small pink blossoms that echo the colors of their flower petals. Some of these plants even end up bearing tiny fruit that resembles small apples. This makes them great plants for those looking for a unique, low maintenance lawn, as they do not require that you water or fertilize nearly as much as other types of grass.

In warm climates, both bluegrass and Bermuda grass are popular choices. Bluegrass is often planted from seed, while Bermuda grass requires cutting and seeding. Both types of grasses do well in low-traffic, high-lighted areas, although Bermuda grass, unlike bluegrass, does not do well in heavy shade.
